El remolcador de satélites, desarrollado por la empresa argentina Epic Aerospace, que fue puesto en órbita el pasado 27 de febrero, desde el Centro Espacial Kennedy, en Florida, ya se encuentra plenamente operativo en el espacio.
La misión incluyó el módulo lunar Nova-C Athena, de Intuitive Machines, y otras tres naves espaciales: las sondas Odin de AstroForge, Lunar Trailblazer de la NASA y el remolcador CHIMERA GEO-1, cuyo objetivo es brindar transporte de última milla para satélites que carecen de sistemas de propulsión propios y permitir, así, su posicionamiento preciso en órbita.
Esta primera nave tiene 1,2 metros de largo, 88 cm de ancho, 60 cm de alto y pesa 145 kilos. Lleva, además, un motor químico de bajo costo, de 90 kilogramos de fuerza de empuje. Esta innovación implica menores costos operativos para las empresas, al lograr un fuerte ahorro de combustible. El sistema de propulsión del Chimera GEO-1 fue fabricado por el equipo de CENTEC Rafaela, en Santa Fe, utilizando componentes altamente especializados. Esta colaboración permitió optimizar diseños y garantizar la precisión necesaria para aplicaciones espaciales extremas, lo que subraya la relevancia de la cooperación entre Epic Aerospace y CENTEC Rafaela en tecnología de propulsión y manufactura avanzada.
Epic Aerospace es una start up fundada por el argentino Ignacio Belieres Montero, con 40 empleados y sedes en Ezeiza, Montevideo y Estados Unidos. El objetivo final, según su creador, es construir una constelación de naves remolcadoras y crear la primera red de transporte en el espacio. “Buscamos, a futuro, que estas naves recarguen combustible en estaciones de servicio dispuestas en el espacio. Sería ideal tener 50 de estas Chimeras en órbita”, se entusiasma Belieres Montero. Sobre la construcción de estos remolcadores espaciales, precisó que cuentan con partes fabricadas en Argentina y, luego, pasan a una planta piloto en Uruguay, donde se hace su integración. “Este es un proyecto ambicioso, ya que se necesitan grandes dimensiones para poder llevar satélites de hasta 200 kilos”, explicó.
Este joven emprendedor de 27 años confiesa que construye cohetes para lanzarlos desde que tenía 15. “Arranqué desde la terraza de mi mamá. Me enamoré de la industria aeroespacial con el correr de los años y me detuve a pensar en los problemas a futuro en este sector. Los cohetes más baratos serían los que se puedan reutilizar, y los satélites van a pesar cada vez menos”, afirmó.
A nivel nacional, recientemente, se firmó un convenio marco de cooperación entre la Secretaría de Innovación, Ciencia y Tecnología de la Nación, Epic Aerospace, la Comisión Nacional de Actividades Espaciales (CONAE) y la empresa de servicios tecnológicos Veng, a fin de impulsar la colaboración público-privada en materia de investigación y desarrollo de tecnología y ciencia espacial.
