El objetivo es crear un sistema biotecnol\u00f3gico capaz de generar prote\u00ednas en \u00f3rbita sin depender de env\u00edos terrestres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El nombre del programa proviene del acr\u00f3nimo en ingl\u00e9s Hydrogen Oxidizing Bacteria In Weightlessness As a source of Nutrition. La propuesta se basa en el uso de microorganismos que consumen hidr\u00f3geno y di\u00f3xido de carbono para obtener un polvo nutritivo bajo condiciones de ingravidez. El procedimiento emplea fermentaci\u00f3n de gas, t\u00e9cnica probada en laboratorios terrestres que ahora la ESA busca adaptar al entorno espacial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El desarrollo, financiado dentro del programa Terrae Novae, est\u00e1 encabezado por la empresa alemana OHB System AG junto con la firma finlandesa Solar Foods, creadora de la prote\u00edna Solein. Este compuesto, que se obtiene a partir de gases y nitr\u00f3geno, no necesita suelo, agua ni luz solar. El resultado es un alimento en forma de polvo rico en nutrientes, ideal para sostener a las tripulaciones en expediciones hacia la Luna o Marte, donde el abastecimiento constante resulta inviable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El experimento se llevar\u00e1 a cabo en la Estaci\u00f3n Espacial Internacional, dentro de un m\u00f3dulo del tama\u00f1o de una caja peque\u00f1a equipado con un incubador, sensores y cartuchos de gas. En su interior, las bacterias ser\u00e1n alimentadas con hidr\u00f3geno, ox\u00edgeno, di\u00f3xido de carbono y urea, recreando un ciclo cerrado para aprovechar los recursos disponibles a bordo. Si la producci\u00f3n resulta exitosa, marcar\u00e1 un avance decisivo hacia la autosuficiencia alimentaria fuera de la Tierra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El desaf\u00edo t\u00e9cnico es considerable. En ingravidez, los l\u00edquidos se comportan de modo diferente, y se dificulta la mezcla y el control de gases. Adem\u00e1s, la combinaci\u00f3n de hidr\u00f3geno y ox\u00edgeno implica riesgos de combusti\u00f3n, por lo que el sistema debe ser extremadamente estable. Otro reto es la miniaturizaci\u00f3n: todo el conjunto debe operar de forma autom\u00e1tica, con m\u00ednimo mantenimiento y ocupar el menor espacio posible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>M\u00e1s all\u00e1 de su aplicaci\u00f3n en el espacio, la tecnolog\u00eda podr\u00e1 utilizarse en regiones \u00e1ridas, en zonas polares o en entornos urbanos con limitaciones de suelo y clima. Lo que hoy se prueba en \u00f3rbita tambi\u00e9n puede servir para afrontar los desaf\u00edos alimentarios en la Tierra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HOBI-WAN representa un ejemplo de innovaci\u00f3n impulsada por la exploraci\u00f3n. Si las pruebas resultan positivas, la ESA habr\u00e1 dado un paso hacia una nueva forma de supervivencia humana fuera del planeta: una en la que las tripulaciones puedan producir su propia comida a
