El proyecto es dirigido por el Ames Research Center, con apoyo cient\u00edfico de la Universidad de California, en Berkeley. El lanzamiento est\u00e1 previsto para fines de 2025, desde Cabo Ca\u00f1averal, Florida, por la compa\u00f1\u00eda Blue Origin, con su cohete New Glenn, dentro del programa Venture-Class Acquisition of Dedicated and Rideshare Missions (VADR), que busca misiones cient\u00edficas m\u00e1s econ\u00f3micas y r\u00e1pidas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La propuesta representa un cambio importante en la forma de hacer ciencia sobre Marte, rompe con el modelo tradicional de grandes sondas costosas y de desarrollo prolongado. ESCAPADE est\u00e1 formada por dos sat\u00e9lites gemelos del tama\u00f1o de un electrodom\u00e9stico, dise\u00f1ados bajo la l\u00f3gica de las misiones&nbsp;<em>smallsat<\/em>: plataformas m\u00e1s compactas, r\u00e1pidas de construir y mucho menos costosas que las naves convencionales. Cada sat\u00e9lite lleva sensores para medir las part\u00edculas cargadas, los campos magn\u00e9ticos y las variaciones del plasma solar. Con estas observaciones simult\u00e1neas, los cient\u00edficos esperan entender, con mayor precisi\u00f3n, c\u00f3mo el viento solar erosiona la atm\u00f3sfera del planeta y c\u00f3mo ese fen\u00f3meno pudo afectar la habitabilidad en el pasado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El desarrollo tecnol\u00f3gico es uno de los puntos fuertes. Los ingenieros aplicaron soluciones adaptadas al espacio profundo: sistemas de propulsi\u00f3n el\u00e9ctrica simples y livianos, una avi\u00f3nica reducida en peso, comunicaciones m\u00e1s eficientes y una electr\u00f3nica de bajo consumo. Esto permiti\u00f3 recortar los costos y los tiempos de producci\u00f3n a menos de diez a\u00f1os, tiempo que suelen requerir las misiones interplanetarias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Otro elemento innovador est\u00e1 en el lanzamiento. ESCAPADE viajar\u00e1 a bordo del cohete New Glenn de Blue Origin, un veh\u00edculo pesado y reutilizable que busca abaratar el acceso al espacio profundo. Para la NASA, ser\u00e1 una oportunidad de diversificar a los proveedores y evaluar el desempe\u00f1o de este lanzador privado en una misi\u00f3n cient\u00edfica fuera de la \u00f3rbita terrestre. El vuelo se enmarca en el programa VADR, que promueve soluciones comerciales para proyectos cient\u00edficos de menor presupuesto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adem\u00e1s de su dise\u00f1o compacto, la misi\u00f3n probar\u00e1 nuevas estrategias de navegaci\u00f3n y comunicaci\u00f3n para operar dos sondas al mismo tiempo en \u00f3rbitas diferentes alrededor de Marte, y comprender por qu\u00e9 perdi\u00f3 gran parte de su atm\u00f3sfera. La informaci\u00f3n que se obtenga ayudar\u00e1 a dise\u00f1ar sistemas de protecci\u00f3n para futuras misiones tripuladas y a entender la evoluci\u00f3n de planetas similares a la Tierra.
