Estos turboh\u00e9lices de cuatro motores, altamente especializados, no solo se encargan del estudio de huracanes, sino que tambi\u00e9n participan en misiones cient\u00edficas relacionadas con la atm\u00f3sfera y la qu\u00edmica del aire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aeroespacio.com.ar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/NOAA-Lockheed-WP-3D-Orion-N43RF-taking-off-from-Lakeland-Linder-International-Airport_Photo-by-Jonathan-Shannon.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11442\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Si bien la NOAA cuenta con una variedad de herramientas para predecir huracanes \u2014desde radares hasta sat\u00e9lites y modelos computacionales\u2014, cada una de estas herramientas presenta limitaciones. Los radares terrestres tienen un alcance limitado, y las im\u00e1genes satelitales no siempre proporcionan los detalles necesarios para predecir la evoluci\u00f3n precisa de una tormenta. Es aqu\u00ed donde entran en acci\u00f3n los WP-3D Orion, que vuelan a baja altitud para recolectar informaci\u00f3n que complementa y mejora los modelos de predicci\u00f3n existentes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adquiridos a mediados de los a\u00f1os 70, estos aviones fueron dise\u00f1ados para soportar las condiciones m\u00e1s adversas. Con una gama \u00fanica de instrumentos cient\u00edficos y radares, han permitido a la NOAA mantenerse a la vanguardia en el monitoreo de huracanes, tormentas severas, calidad atmosf\u00e9rica y tendencias clim\u00e1ticas. Su capacidad operativa global ha llevado a estos aviones, apodados &#8220;Kermit&#8221; (N42RF) y &#8220;Miss Piggy&#8221; (N43RF), a participar en investigaciones en diversas partes del mundo, desde el \u00c1rtico hasta el Caribe, siempre al servicio de la seguridad y la comprensi\u00f3n del clima.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Una de las herramientas clave de estas aeronaves es la sonda GPS&nbsp;<em>dropwindsonde<\/em>, que se lanza en paraca\u00eddas desde el avi\u00f3n para registrar datos sobre presi\u00f3n, temperatura, humedad y vientos a diferentes altitudes. Estos datos se env\u00edan a los Centros Nacionales de Predicci\u00f3n Ambiental y al Centro Nacional de Huracanes para mejorar los modelos de huracanes. Tambi\u00e9n pueden desplegar batiterm\u00f3grafos desechables, que miden la temperatura del oc\u00e9ano a diferentes profundidades, lo que proporciona una visi\u00f3n m\u00e1s completa de la interacci\u00f3n entre el mar y la tormenta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Equipados con radares de fuselaje inferior y Doppler de cola, los WP-3D permiten obtener im\u00e1genes detalladas del interior de la tormenta, comparables a una resonancia magn\u00e9tica. Estas im\u00e1genes brindan informaci\u00f3n crucial sobre la estructura de la tormenta, lo que permite a los meteor\u00f3logos analizar su evoluci\u00f3n con mayor precisi\u00f3n. Adem\u00e1s, cuentan con radi\u00f3metros de microondas desarrollados por la NOAA que miden la velocidad del viento en la superficie del oc\u00e9ano, informaci\u00f3n vital para las predicciones de intensidad de tormentas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El lunes 7 de octubre, el equipo de cazadores de huracanes se adentr\u00f3 en el poderoso hurac\u00e1n Milton a bordo del &#8220;Miss Piggy&#8221;, mientras la tormenta ganaba fuerza en el sur del Golfo de M\u00e9xico. Milton, uno de los huracanes m\u00e1s intensos jam\u00e1s registrados en el Atl\u00e1ntico, se degrad\u00f3 a categor\u00eda 4 el mi\u00e9rcoles 9 de octubre por la ma\u00f1ana. Con vientos que alcanzaban los 250 kil\u00f3metros por hora (155 mph), se esperaba que impactara \u00e1reas densamente pobladas como Tampa, Sarasota y Fort Myers, lo que generar\u00eda una devastaci\u00f3n significativa. Los meteor\u00f3logos advirtieron que el hurac\u00e1n podr\u00eda producir una marejada cicl\u00f3nica de hasta 4,5 metros (15 pies), que superar\u00eda los niveles observados durante el paso del hurac\u00e1n Helene el mes anterior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finalmente, el hurac\u00e1n Milton atraves\u00f3 Florida hoy, tras haber tocado tierra en la costa oeste del Estado unas horas antes. La tormenta provoc\u00f3 tornados mortales, destruy\u00f3 viviendas y dej\u00f3 sin suministro el\u00e9ctrico a casi 2 millones de personas.
